Almoneda — Rastro Letters, Recast
Almoneda takes its name from the Spanish word for the public auction of movable goods, generally used. It also refers to the private and voluntary sale of jewelry and junk, done without the intervention of justice. Historically, it meant the market or sale of objects and spoils won from the enemy in war.
Today, “almoneda” is closely tied to places where “old things” are sold. In Madrid, these finds often cluster around El Rastro, the open-air market held on Sundays and some holidays in the city center. If you walk long enough and look closely, you can uncover remarkable typographic details. This typeface grew from late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century sources—boxes, posters, books—showing uppercase letters in many shapes, embedded letters, and rare ligatures. Elements taken from street signs, bar tiles, and commemorative pieces from Madrid helped complete the design, made with care and patience.
Almoneda is a modern typeface with a pronounced axis and strong contrast. Its uppercase includes several character sets to mix, match, and enjoy. It also includes a large number of ligatures and discretionary ligatures. Almoneda is a typeface that will not leave you indifferent.
